The New Look NIO 333 Team Is Ready For the Season to Start
With the 2020-2021 ABB FIA Formula E World Championships season slated to finally start in at the end of February, the NIO 333 FE Team announced recently some personnel and livery changes that are sure to turn some heads in the motorsport world. Returning for NIO 333 is team leader and veteran racer Oliver Turvey who has been a mainstay for the team since his debut in 2015. NIO 333 is coming off of a disappointing 2019-2020 season where the team failed to collect any points in the standings, and finished 12th in the Championship rankings, its worst finish in the six seasons that the team has been together.
Entering the fold for this season is newcomer Tom Blomqvist who replaces Ma Quingha and Daniel Abt who both filled in for brief periods last season. The addition of Blomqvist as a first team driver shows that NIO 333 is hoping to bring some stability to its team after a revolving door of drivers has brought inconsistency to the team’s performance. Blomqvist has been around for a few seasons now, appearing briefly in 2017-18 with the Andretti team, as well as a short stint last season with the Jaguar FE Team in Berlin, Germany. Turvey himself is thrilled to add Blomqvist to the team and welcomed his new driving mate with a official statement where he said, “I would like to welcome Tom into the team; I have known him for a number of years and I look forward to working closely with him to help push the team forward.”
NIO 333 Team CEO Vincent Wang is also excited to have Blomqvist joining the team, noting that the young driver is well known around the motorsport world and Wang himself noticed Bloqvist’s skills when Wang was in the broadcast booth. Wang even recalled an old Chinese proverb that he applied to Blomqvist’s arrival with the Chinese team: “there is an old saying in China, ‘a thousand miles to meet.’ I believe that Tom’s joining the NIO 333 FE Team is also the embodiment of fate.” Clearly Wang and the rest of the NIO 333 Team have high hopes for Blomqvist this season, as they will look to him and Turvey to bounce back from the previous year’s last place finish.
But Blomqvist was not the only new reveal by NIO 333 as we head towards the start of the season. The team revealed its new livery, the NIO 333 FE 001, which is sure to turn some heads on the track. The new vehicle is draped with the classic teal colouring of the NIO 333 team, while also adding a stunning new electric blue contrast, highlighted by white pinstripes that dynamically flow across the contoured, carbon body. Team Principal, Christian Silk, also noted that improvements were made to the chassis as well as an all new powertrain that should allow the driver to content for more points and better finishes this season.
The new NIO 333 team and livery will be on display at the start of the Formula E Championship season on February 26th in Saudi Arabia.
